A man staying overnight in the Denver airport says that he heard an eerie noise at 2 in the morning. What was it?
The Denver airport has a pretty weird reputation—and if you’ve ever visited, you probably understand why.
There are many, many elements of the Denver airport that are just plain weird. For example, when you arrive at the airport, you are greeted by a giant blue horse with glowing red eyes known to locals as “Blucifer.” Once inside, you are surrounded by artwork that appears to depict some sort of end-times scenario.
And that’s not even mentioning the gargoyles—or the fact that, for some reason, the airport is the largest commercial airport by land footprint in North America. You can’t convince me that so many people are visiting Colorado that they need an airport the size of a nation state. There’s just gotta be something else going on here!
Unfortunately, every day that passes brings us no closer to the answer of what made Denver International Airport so odd. On the contrary, thanks to TikTok, we’ve got even more things to be freaked out about regarding the airport. For example, what on earth is this sound?
What’s Going On At The Denver Airport?
In a video with over 2 million views, TikTok user Eddie (@iamrealeddiejayyy) explains that he recently overheard something strange at the Denver airport.
According to Eddie, he was staying overnight when, around 2 AM, a strange sound carried through the airport.
“The airport was almost completely empty when I walked through the train station that takes you between the gates and baggage claim. Then I started hearing this loud, low-frequency sound echoing through the station. I honestly couldn’t tell where it was coming from or what was making it,” Eddie writes in the caption.
In the video, Eddie records the apparent noise. It sounds like a fuzzy, digital siren, wavering unevenly before eventually dying out.
“Standing there in the middle of an empty Denver airport at 2 in the morning, hearing some strange frequency vibrating through the station, definitely makes all those conspiracy theories about this place hit a little differently,” he shares.
“Maybe there’s a perfectly normal explanation,” he adds. “But at 2:00 a.m… it sure didn’t feel normal.”
Eddie then states that he “didn’t really experience paranormal activity”—though he did spend his night walking around the airport rather than settling down in a single location.
What Is This Sound?
It’s unclear what exactly this sound is. However, chances are high that it’s simply a test of audio equipment.
Looking at a spectral analysis of the audio, it appears that the main tone is at almost exactly 1,000 hertz. For context, here’s what that sounds like. There are also some other sounds going on, but the 1,000 hertz frequency is the most distinct.
This could give a clue as to what the signal was. A project manual for a fire alarm at the Denver airport offers instructions on how to test the system for distortion. One of the instructions involves feeding the system signals at various frequencies; 1,000 hertz is one of those frequencies.
Another section recommends feeding pink noise into the system. That sounds like this. This recommendation could also explain the noises heard by Eddie.
In short, there are many reasons why the Denver airport might genuinely freak you out and make you think the building is out to get you. This one, however, seems to be an attempt to make you safer.

In the comments section, some users affirmed the theory that this was an audio test.
“I can provide some insight on that. The Emergency Communication System in the airport performs load testing on the speaker circuits to assure the right wattage is connected to each of the circuits. Every hour throughout the day the frequency sent out (20 kilohertz) is out of the audible hearing range of humans,” claimed a user. “At 0200 hours the there are two frequencies sent out that are within the audible hearing range of humans. There is a 1 kilohertz and a 400 hertz frequency test that is within the audible hearing range for humans. The reason you hear it sound like it is changing volume is because it is going from one circuit to the next performing that test.”
BroBible could not verify this information. Neither could many other commenters—so instead of discussing the noise, they just talked about their own freaky experiences at the Denver airport.
“I was there at 2am too and when I went to the bathroom the faucet water was on. No one around,” said a commenter. “I caught it on camera. I asked to turn it on again and it did.”
“No bs I’ve been stuck in Denver airport at least 3 times. twice overnight. One time I woke up at my gate after my flight had already left and I had one shoe on,” offered a second. “If I can help it I’ll never return.”
