In 1988, the National Film Registry (NFR) was founded and every year since the United States National Film Preservation Board (NFPB) selects 25 films to be preserved by the Library of Congress. For 2017, the 25 movies included some absolute classics such as Superman, Spartacus, Dumbo, Field of Dreams, Goonies, Titanic, and Die Hard. Yes, just in time for the holidays, everyone’s favorite Christmas movie, Die Hard, is being honored forever and John McClane will live in infamy.

The National Film Registry showcases the diversity of American films with the honoring of 25 films every year bringing the total number of films in the registry to 725 movies. The National Film Preservation Board “works to ensure the survival, conservation and increased public availability of America’s film heritage, including: advising the Librarian on its recommendations for annual selections to the National Film Registry, apprising the Librarian of changing trends and policies in the field of film preservation, and counseling the Librarian on ongoing implementation of the National Film Preservation Plan.” The films in the registry span the years from 1905 until 2000, and include Hollywood blockbusters, documentaries, silent movies, animations, shorts, independent, and even home movies.
