Now that Game of Thrones has officially wrapped up on HBO, fans attention has no turned to the upcoming prequel series, as well as George R.R. Martin’s long-gestating continuation of A Song of Ice and FireThe Winds of Winter.

Having last released the most recent A Song of Ice and Fire entry back in 2011 with the publication of A Dance with Dragons, fans of the iconic fantasy series have been patiently waiting for the continuation of the famed saga for close to a decade now.

And, according to George R.R. Martin, now that Game of Thrones is off the air, him wrapping up A Song of Ice and Fire is likely than ever, as the conclusion of Game of Thrones is “freeing” as he’s now working at his “own pace”:

“You can’t please everybody, so you’ve got to please yourself. There were a couple of years where, if I could have finished the book, I could have stayed ahead of the show for another couple of years, and the stress was enormous.”

“I don’t think [the TV series] was very good for me. The very thing that should have speeded me up actually slowed me down. Every day I sat down to write and even if I had a good day … I’d feel terrible because I’d be thinking: ‘My God, I have to finish the book. I’ve only written four pages when I should have written 40.’” [The Guardian]

It’s obvious that George R.R. Martin , similar to the rest of us, felt some semblance of relief when the series came to a close… and that’s a damn shame that’s the lasting feeling that Game of Thrones left us with, considering it was once discussed as arguably the greatest television show in the history of the medium.

HBO’s dive into the world of Westeros will continue next year when the prequel series, tentatively titled Bloodmoon, is released. However, at this time, neither The Winds of Winter nor A Dream of Spring have a publication date.
