Golf is a notoriously expensive sport. In one day, a golfer can easily expect to spend around $100-$200 if you count things like rounds, club rentals, a cart, and food or drinks. Private golf club memberships can be a whole other level.
In order to cut some of these costs, some golfers bring their own alcoholic drinks onto the course. However, many golf courses explicitly prohibit outside alcohol.
As a response, some courses appear to have found ways to curb this behavior. In a recent TikTok video, one golfer shows a small but effective technique that caught his attention.
How Do Golf Courses Make Sure Golfers Don’t Bring Outside Drinks?
TikToker and golfer John (@bigjohnnn17) showed the ‘trick’ in a recent video he filmed while sitting on a golf cart holding his beer can.
“Golf courses are getting smarter,” he wrote in the video’s text overlay.
Then he shows the beer. Instead of serving it as-is, the golf course appears to have put a wrapper around the top of the can to signal that the drink was purchased there.
This way, the course may not need to search every cooler or golf bag. Staff can easily tell which cans came from the course, making outside beers a lot harder to hide.
“That’s f—– up,” John says. “The fact they have the wrapping on there, like, that’s let us sneak in beers, you know what I mean? Like, have a little bit of class. That’s so f—— up. F—— bastards.”
“Don’t wrap the beers,” John added in the video’s caption. The clip has garnered over 1.4 million views.
Commenters Were Divided
In the comments, viewers were split between supporting the rule and supporting the sneaking.
“All golf courses should be BYOB,” one commenter wrote. “I always bring my own drinks”
Another viewer pointed out the contradiction in John’s complaint.
“‘Let us bring our own beers, have a little class’ has to be the best oxymoron I’ve heard in a while,” they wrote.
Someone else had a workaround in mind.
“My petty a– is taking that can home and cutting around that wrapping and just sliding it on to any drink I bring,” they wrote.
What Happens If You Get Caught With Outside Alcohol?
Usually, the immediate punishment is getting kicked off the course. But it can escalate depending on the course’s policy and what happens after staff confronts the golfer.
At Florida’s Black Bear Golf Club, for example, the official policy says alcohol not purchased at the course is not allowed on the property. The course also says anyone found with outside alcohol will be required to leave and will not receive a refund.
Wakulla Sands Golf Club has a similar rule. Its administrative rules say outside alcohol is not allowed on the golf course, in the parking lot, or in other areas of the facility. The policy states that outside alcohol can put the golf course at risk for fines and possible loss of its liquor license. “Bringing alcoholic beverages to the golf course is in violation of Florida liquor law, and violators place themselves and the golf course at risk for fines and potential loss of liquor license,” the policy reads.
