A man's Hennessy bottle froze after he stored it in his basement freezer.
“Alcohol doesn’t freeze.” At some point in your life, you may have heard this statement. One man questioned what he believed to be true after storing his Hennessy in his basement freezer.
“Yo, am I bugging?” TikTok creator FoogaZiii (@foogaziii) asks, unveiling his Hennessy, which is covered in frost. When he holds the bottle upside down, it’s clear the liquid is frozen in place.
“I thought alcohol don’t freeze,” he says, confused. “What?”
‘Someone’s Been Drinking Your Alcohol’
FoogaZiii’s video amassed 7.5 million views. Viewers overwhelmingly blamed any teenagers in the house, arguing they must have pulled the old watered-down alcohol trick.
“Do you have teenagers?” a top comment asks.
“U got kids?” a second said.
“Its totally normal dude, my dad’s bottle also froze up until I turned 18,” a third quipped.
However, FoogaZiii is adamant that no one doctored the drink, blaming the freezer instead.
“Nawwww no teenagers here,” he clarified. “Looked it up too, freezer definitely a problem.”
As proof, he places the Hennessy bottle in a new location in a follow-up video. “The first time was my basement fridge had the Hennessy bottle all frozen up,” he says in the follow-up. “This time is in my upstairs fridge.”
Then, he stands in front of the upstairs refrigerator, waiting for the moment of truth.
“Without further ado,” he starts.
The content creator opens the freezer door, and the Hennessy bottle is full of liquid. “Ain’t no apple juice in here. No iced tea. Come on, man,” Foogaziii says.
Does Alcohol Freeze?
Indeed, it can. But it all comes down to the alcohol and water levels in the drink as well as the temperature the drink is stored in. Pure ethanol alcohol tends to freeze once it reaches -173 degrees Fahrenheit. Pure water has to drop to 32 degrees Fahrenheit. According to Delish, water and other ingredients lower the alcohol-by-volume (ABV) percentage, raising the freezing point.
This is why certain alcoholic drinks that contain mostly water should not be placed in the freezer because it can affect the flavor or destroy the bottle. Food & Wine advises against putting beer, wine, gin, tequila, rum, whiskey, and cognac in the freezer.
Does Hennessy Freeze?
Since Hennessy is a cognac (brown spirit), the outlet advises against putting it in the freezer because it can alter the subtle tastes and become cloudy. Freezing is not really a concern due to its high alcohol content. However, it does have the potential to freeze under the right conditions.
