
China’s traffic police force now has a humanoid robot, complete with uniform, cap and high-tech sunglasses, patrolling the streets. Welcome to the future.
The city of Wuhu in Anhui Province has deployed Wuyou Zhijing R001, a humanoid robot traffic officer, to support human police officers at congested junctions.
The robot, wearing a police uniform and headgear, uses millimeter-wave radar, LiDAR, ultrasonic sensors, and a 360-degree camera to detect infractions such as jaywalking and missing helmets, issue spoken warnings, and guide traffic with human-like hand gestures.
The robot connects to city command centers, and violations are fed into public infrastructure dashboards in real time. Bonus: they can put in a full eight-hour day before their battery packs need swapping.
According to AI Certs, the automatic cameras record infractions with timestamped proof. Only when necessary do escalations go to human supervisors. Urban automation planners can also use integrated data to identify congestion hotspots.
The robots can endure boring hours in the heat or rain better than humans, and they free human police officers to focus on emergencies.
Reliability is still not ideal, however. They still require human attendants, and current models struggle with jobs involving delicate manipulation, such as handing documents.
China is deploying humanoid robots across a wide range of applications
In China, humanoid robots now perform tasks such as delivering food to restaurant diners, sorting packages at delivery centers, and making ice cream for park visitors. (They are also begging for money like the homeless.)
Developers are also creating them for emotional interaction and education. As The Express Tribune reports, robots can now play football and volleyball and dance with professional finesse (most of the time), while robot dogs can mimic real pet behavior.
“In industrial settings, robots are increasingly used for sorting, assembly and coordinated multi-machine operations, showing advances in precision, mobility and system integration,” the outlet explained. “In healthcare, surgical robots, including those used for dental implants, cardiac, orthopedics and interventional procedures, are improving precision, reducing risks and enhancing efficiency in clinical environments.”
“From humanoid robots performing complex tasks to driverless vehicles navigating busy streets, the country is building an interconnected ecosystem where intelligent machines play an increasingly central role,” the report concluded.
