Disgraced Hollywood actor James Franco has made a recent abrupt debut on social media, having gained over 540,000 followers and 1.5 million likes on TikTok since posting his first video on June 3. Franco’s posts, however, have left viewers bewildered, with some speculating it could be tied to the release of a new movies and others turning to conspiracy theories for an explanation

The bizarre nature of James Franco’s posts on TikTok — the New York Post said they’ve sparked “concern,” while the Daily Mail said the “erratic” videos have “sparked alarm — led to speculation that the videos were being made with AI, which Franco addressed in the video that has caught the attention of social media beyond TikTok.

“Hey guys, this is James Franco. Me, really James Franco. I’m here at my house. I’m not promoting anything, OK? I’m making this account because, all right, some serious, some serious sh*ts going on. OK, and look here, this is real. OK, I’m real. It’s me, not AI, not anything. OK? Could AI James do this?” he says before writing his account name, @jamesfranco2319, on a piece of paper.

“This is me. OK. For those who know. All right. Some serious stuff going on; that’s why I’m contacting you, that’s why I’m doing this. OK? I know, I maybe seem crazy, like, why, what’s going on, what’s the gimmick? No, this is real. Real. OK, I can’t say too much right now. I just need you to follow me, then I’ll know who’s down, and I’m going to show you some crazy stuff. OK? Just follow me, I’m gonna, I’m going to show you.”

I can’t say to much right now. But stick around and I promise it will all make sense.

Other videos have seen him claim he saw an alien in his garage and describe feelings of being surveilled, while also saying things like “if I disappear, you know what happened,” and that he’s “not making it up.” In all of the videos, Franco is wearing a tattered blue shirt with two pieces of tape on the front and “Bruce Robinson” written across the chest in black marker.

James Franco’s strange TikTok videos could all be a promotion for his upcoming movie Love Meets in the Sunshine

The most likely answer is that Franco is gearing up to promote something. It could be traditional like a movie or modern like a prediction market. Many of the comments suggest it’s tied to a film called SunshineLove Meets in the Sunshine is the official title but many of the TikTok commenters are simply calling it Sunshine — which wrapped production in November 2025 and sees Franco starring as “a terminally ill ball of sunshine (Franco) talks a grumpy drifter (Antonyan) into driving him across the desert to meet a maybe-real doctor (Forrie J. Smith),” according to Deadline. An official release date for Love Meets in the Sunshine has not been announced.

Given that the film is a road-trip comedy between an embodiment of sunshine and a regular human being, the “alien” that Franco is referencing (in character as the ball of sunshine) could be the “grumpy drifter,” his-co-lead in the film played by Nick Antonyan.

Furthermore, Franco’s account only follows two users: the official account for an upcoming film titled Love Meets in the Sunshine and Christian Guiton, the film’s director. Guiton, in his own TikTok video, however, seemed to suggest that Franco’s videos have nothing to do with the movie Love Meets in the Sunshine.

“In a June 5 TikTok, Guiton noted that he ‘spoke with James’ about his odd first few videos, but the actor ‘didn’t give me much.’ He was just like, ‘I found something… and everyone needs to know.’ Guiton even pointed out the fact that Franco only follows him and Sunshine, and then points out that, despite promising the videos aren’t promo, ‘now I’m doing promo.'” [via Entertainment Weekly]

What is the unverified conspiracy theory about Monsters Inc. making the rounds on social media?

These more logical explanations haven’t stopped the videos from sparking conspiracy theories.

Conspiracy theories about secret cabals have become a fixture of modern society and have only increased following the revelations in the Epstein files. This mode of thinking has been applied to Franco’s social media posts, with one unverified conspiracy theory linking it to a plot point in the Pixar movie Monsters Inc. A single video breaking the unverified theory down has accumulated over two million views on Instagram and X/Twitter, with countless other speculative social media posts also proliferating.

Videos on various social media platforms have suggested that 2319 is a reference to the detail in Monsters Inc.: when shouted, the code “23-19” — used to alert the monsters to the presence of a human item — prompts an emergency response from the Child Detection Agency (CDA) for immediate decontamination and quarantine.

Franco has not starred in a major Hollywood production since Netflix’s 2018 film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs due to accusations of sexually exploitative and inappropriate behavior for multiple women, many of whom were women that Franco taught at university.

Back in May, however, it was reported that Franco had been cast in a “small role” in the upcoming Rambo prequel John Rambo, which stars Noah Centineo and is scheduled to hit theaters in 2027, and would mark Franco’s first appearance in a major theatrical release since 2017, when he starred in The Disaster Artist and had an uncredited cameo in Alien: Covenant (director Ridley Scott killed him off by having his sleeping pod burst into flames within the first 10 minutes of the movie).
