Back when Jennifer Lawrence was in the midst of steadfastly undoing all of the goodwill she had built up with her star-making performances in the early 2010s, she starred in Darren Aronofsky’s 2017 psychological thriller film mother!.

And according to the Academy Award-winning actress, despite “sleeping with” Aronofsky at the time the film was made, she still didn’t understand its plot.

“On a scale of 1 to totally confused, how much did you understand your film mother!?” Andy Cohen asked Lawrence during a recent appearance on his nightly talk show Watch What Happens Live!.

“I’m going to be honest. Well, I was sleeping with the director [Darren Aronofsky], so I had CliffsNotes. So, 5? Or a 4. But if anybody needs any tips on understanding their films, you know what to do!”

In addition to Lawrence, mother! also starred Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, and more. The film made about $44 million against a $30 million budget and currently has a 68% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

As mentioned above, the film came in the midst of a run of critical and commercial bombs for Lawrence, who was starring in poorly-received films such as Joy, X-Men: Apocalypse, Passengers, Red Sparrow, and Dark Phoenix.

The 32-year-old Oscar winner, who recently gave birth to her first child (not with Aronofsky, but with husband Cooke Maroney), has turned things around in the last few years, though.

In 2021, she starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the Best Picture-nominated satire Don’t Look Up, which she then followed up with the well-reviewed 2022 drama Causeway alongside Brian Tyree Henry — who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film — and this summer’s R-rated comedy No Hard Feelings, which apparently features Lawrence putting forth a throwback movie star caliber performance.

No Hard Feelings, which famously features Lawrence performing a birthday suit-wearing fight scene, is now playing in theaters. Check out the official trailer for the film below.
