In case you haven’t been following Kanye West on Twitter over the past several days, he has found a new mission. He is pushing for recording artists to have the right to own the master recordings of the music they produce.
Other than a select few like Jay-Z, U2, Rihanna, and Metallica, most musicians and singers’ music is actually owned by the label they are signed with and have little to no chance of ever owning their music, so it’s actually a decent thing Kanye is trying to do.
Kanye West is one of those recording artists that does not own the music he has produced over the years and now he says he will not be releasing any more new songs until he is officially out of his contract with Sony/ATV and Universal.
West also said he wants to see the contracts of other artists and referred to himself as the “new Moses.”
“I’m not gonna watch my people be enslaved. I’m putting my life on the line for my people. The music industry and the NBA are modern day slave ships. I’m the new Moses,” West tweeted on Monday.
Kanye was back at it Tuesday night, posting an unending series of tweets that ran well into Wednesday morning, claiming, among many things, that both Prince and Michael Jackson were killed because they had ownership of their master recordings.
Contracts in all industries need to be simplified now. Complicated contracts are how businesses, music companies and sports take advantage of talent We will expose these contracts and make them transparent now support new talent, startups and amend all old contracts

De La Soul can’t even get their music on iTunes
— ye (@kanyewest) September 16, 2020
Oh, man, now the record labels have gone too far.
When you sign a music deal you sign away your rights. Without the masters you can’t do anything with your own music. Someone else controls where it’s played and when it’s played. Artists have nothing accept the fame, touring and merch
— ye (@kanyewest) September 16, 2020
But… in all fairness, you signed a contract, and got paid, and in Kanye’s case got paid a lot.
This is how it be when artist try to get our masters … the stairs are covered with lotion pic.twitter.com/1pyNK0xkWW

Seven hours later Kanye was back.
We’ve gotten comfortable with not having what we deserve … they allow us to have a little money from touring get some gold chains some alcohol some girls and fake numbers that feed our egos … but we don’t own our masters 🤔
— ye (@kanyewest) September 16, 2020
Right. That was in the contract, that you signed, voluntarily.
We our supporting other people’s kids … we could spend our whole life in the music industry but our kids gotta go work for another company when they grow up
— ye (@kanyewest) September 16, 2020
I am the only person who can speak on this because I made multi billions outside of music no musicians make billions inside of music I’m going to change this
— ye (@kanyewest) September 16, 2020
I know a lot of musicians are not allowed to say anything but I can’t be muted or cancelled so I’m going to say everything as always
— ye (@kanyewest) September 16, 2020
Is that true? Is Kanye uncancellable?
We sat back and watched Nick Cannon get canceled and we go to play ball in a bubble with black lives matter on our backs … brothers let’s stand together for real … there is no NBA or music industry without black people … fair contracts matter … ownership matters
— ye (@kanyewest) September 16, 2020
People say it’s enough and I got my point across … the point isn’t across until we cross the point
— ye (@kanyewest) September 16, 2020
We used to diss Michael Jackson the media made us call him crazy … then they killed him
— ye (@kanyewest) September 16, 2020
Pretty sure he just crossed a point right there.
The media tries to kill our heroes one at a time
— ye (@kanyewest) September 16, 2020
Uh oh. Here comes the ALL CAPS tweets.

Again, not sure God is all that worried about how the music industry is run, but Kanye truly believes he’s got his ear.
