SZA and KAYTRANADA have some new music in the works. They debuted their unreleased track at an afterparty in Brooklyn earlier this week and had the place jumping.
And yet, it was the way he smoked a J without touching it to his lips that left people in awe!
SZA is currently on out on the ‘Grand National’ tour with Kendrick Lamar and Mustard, which is perhaps the premier music event of the summer. That did not prevent her from throwing an absolute banger while in New York City over the weekend. Lizzo was there. KAYTRANADA was there. Justine Skye was there. The list goes on.
Solána shared a clip from the party in which she is singing along to a KAYTRA remix of ‘Deja Vu’ by Beyonce. It was a vibe.

Other videos from throughout the night were equally as lit. Skye debuted a new track with the Haitian-Canadian DJ while Lizzo rocked a blonde wig in the background.

SZA and KAYTRA also debuted new material. Their song ‘Take A Chance’ has been rumored to exist for awhile now. It is finally confirmed.
All of that is great. Who doesn’t love hearing a brand-new song for the first time?!
However, the video that went most viral from the weekend had nothing to do with the music. SZA passed a joint to KAYTRA while he was on the decks. He proceeded to hit it without ever touching it to his mouth.
Don’t get me wrong. I know this is not a new thing. KAYTRANADA did not invent the “protective” way of smoking a joint/blunt/spliff/etc. I would imagine that it has been around for decades, but it was Tommy Chong who really brought it to the mainstream. He would smoke with so many people and there was no way to know what they might be carrying. This is much safer.
With that being said, there were quite a few weed-smokers (both young and old!) who were mind blown by KATRA’s technique. They had never seen it before!
I don’t know if this is how KAYTRANADA always smokes with others or if he was trying to avoid SZA’s lip gloss, but his cupped hand was new to a lot of people on the internet. My feed was clogged with reactions to both the “dream blunt rotation” and his form. Here is Baby Bash to explain how it works:
