On July 1, 2017, Nevada legalized recreational marijuana and it was an instant success. Maybe a little too successful because marijuana dispensaries were running out of weed. Now Nevada is attempting to deal with the growing pains of being a state that sells legal weed. One of the issues is hard-partying tourists taking legal marijuana with them from Las Vegas to areas where weed is illegal. Las Vegas airports now feature marijuana disposal bins so flyers can discard their weed before boarding a plane.

Tourists who visit Las Vegas and fly out of area airports such as McCarran International Airport now have bins to throw away their weed. McCarran International Airport, which is the eighth-busiest airport in the country, now has green metal bins for passengers to ditch their weed before they possibly commit a crime by bringing marijuana into the airport and to their home state.

Las Vegas has installed about 20 “amnesty boxes” over the past week at McCarran, Henderson Executive, and North Las Vegas airports. The local law prohibits marijuana within the airports. Cannabis is not permitted inside the airports; not in the pre-security areas or in the post-security areas. Don’t you have to give your extra weed to some dude down on his luck at the baccarat table and not to a green mailbox?

You’d imagine that these pot bins are extremely popular, especially by folks hoping to score some free dope. Before you attempt to extract some Devil’s Lettuce from the bins, you should know that the receptacle is bolted down to the ground and it is said to be impossible for someone to reach inside to grab some discarded doobs. Airport workers are on the lookout for anyone who attempts to tamper with the bins. Las Vegas paid Logistical Solutions LLC installed to maintain the boxes for $114,059 through the end of the fiscal year. Imagine getting paid over $100K to recycle pot?
