Woman Orders Martini During Happy Hour At Steak 48 Bartop In Los Angeles. Then She Realizes Her Drink Is A Hazard

Ending a long day with a special drink at your favorite restaurant is always a treat. For one Los Angeles woman, though, this was interrupted by a strange physical reaction.

In her video, which has gotten over 248,500 views, TikTok creator Jeselyn Adelina (@jeselyn.adelina) films a martini glass at Steak 48, a fine dining restaurant in Beverly Hills.

When she goes to pick up the glass from above, the top part completely detaches from the rest of it, having broken cleanly down the middle.

“HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?” she wrote on screen. “[Happy] hour gone wrong lol.”

“Is this a sign from God???” she asks in the caption.

In a later follow-up video, Adelina said the Steak 48 staff was just as shocked when they saw what had happened. She reported they offered the group complimentary drinks and “were really cool about it.”

Commenters Have Theories

In the comments section, viewers suggested it may have been thermal shock.

“I waitressed at CPK in college and they ‘upgraded’ our glasses to these thin ones with a thick base,” one user shared. “And if you took them right out of the dishwasher, threw ice and a beverage in them, you had just enough time to walk to the table before the glasses would start exploding.”

Others thought it may have been on purpose. “I thought this was a drink protector, like you can tell if your drink is drugged by the level changing,” another wrote. “But that doesnt make since bc it would also change when u drink it lol.”

“It’s giving law suit and free drinks for life,” a third quipped.

Adelina responded, “I love this place I’ll never sue.”

What is Thermal Shock?

According to a blog post by Lab Choice Australia, thermal shock happens when “one part of the glass changes temperature faster than the rest,” which can cause the glass to shatter unexpectedly.

This is because glass expands when heated and shrinks when cooled. If you pour a cold liquid into a glass vessel, the “shrinkage” happens unevenly, generating stress. If the vessel isn’t strong enough, this can cause it to break.

To avoid this reaction, Lab Choice suggests avoiding abrupt changes from hot to cold or vice versa. Before rinsing a warm glass with cold water, for example, it’s important to let it cool down to room temperature first.

It’s unclear whether this is exactly what happened to Adelina’s martini glass. BroBible has reached out to Steak 48 via contact form and Adelina via email for comment and additional information.
