If you asked the average Marvel Cinematic Universe fan a week ago what they thought about the upcoming Disney+ series Echo, they’d likely tell you they weren’t particularly excited about it and aren’t even sure why Marvel made it to begin with.

Today, however, that tune has changed, as the first trailer for the series has revealed it will be rated TV-MA, the first show in the MCU’s history to have such a rating. With TV-MA essentially being the television version of R-rated, Echo is set to be the most mature and perhaps violent entry into the franchise thus far.

Check out the official trailer for Echo, which premieres on both Disney+ and Hulu on Wednesday, January 10, below.

“It’s a little on the grittier side for Marvel, and shows the breadth of what Marvel is capable of. It is sort of a new direction for the brand, especially for Disney+,” Marvel TV boss Brad Winderbaum said of the series in an interview with THR.

The release of the surprisingly TV-MA-rated Echo comes the same week as Variety published a bombshell report that basically laid out the current chaos unfolding at Marvel Studios given Jonathan Majors’ legal issues (and how that affects the entire phase of films that they planned around his villain, Kang the Conqueror), dipping quality in both their film and television projects, and diminishing box office returns.

While Echo is set to star Alaqua Cox, who reprises her role of Maya Lopez/Echo from Hawkeye, the trailer indicates that Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin will also play a massive role in the series.

In addition to Cox and D’Onofrio, Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Graham Greene, Cody Lightning, Devery Jacobs, and Zahn McClarnon also star in the series. Echo is also set to feature an appearance from Charlie Fox’s Daredevil, as well.

Echo is also a first for the MCU as all of its episodes will be released on January 10 instead of Marvel’s traditional weekly model, which Loki, for example, is currently doing in the midst of its second season.

Given its January 10 release date, Echo will be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe project to release in 2024.
