Over the weekend, former Friends star and Emmy-nominated actor Matthew Perry was pronounced dead at the age of 54 years old after he was found unresponsive in the hot tub located at his Los Angeles home.
At the time the news broke, authorities said that foul play was not suspected to have played a role in Perry’s death.
Now, Perry’s toxicology report has also revealed that there were no signs of fentanyl or meth in his system following his death.
As law enforcement noted to TMZ, however, these results were based on a “less-in-depth” test.
More in-depth tests are still being conducted as part of toxicology to analyze whether any other illegal drugs present in his blood — and if the levels of any prescription meds were at harmful doses.
Those results will likely take anywhere from 4-6 months to be returned, and once all that data is gathered, the coroner will determine the cause and manner of death.
The results of Perry’s toxicology reports are of such interest because of the actor’s long and open struggles with substance abuse addiction, a topic he covered extensively in his 2022 book Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir.
Perry’s family released the following statement following the news of their son’s passing:
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother. Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love.”
At this time, while it is unclear when and where Perry’s funeral will be held, reports have indicated that his longtime Friends cast mates — Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer — will be in attendance. Kudrow is even apparently considering adopting Perry’s dog, Alfred.
Friends, which ran on NBC from 1996 to 2004, is one of the most popular American sitcoms ever made.
In addition to Friends, Perry was known for his work in projects such as Fools Rush In, The Whole Nine Yards, The Whole Ten Yards, 17 Again, Ally McBeal, The West Wing, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.
