Now we’ve got the wizards over at Microsoft not only applying for, but receiving a patent that will allow them to create a chatbot using personal information about dead people, including things like their images, voices, social media posts, and electronic messages.
According to the patent…
The specific person [who the chat bot represents] may correspond to a past or present entity (or a version thereof), such as a friend, a relative, an acquaintance, a celebrity, a fictional character, a historical figure, a random entity etc.
It also adds, “The specific person may also correspond to oneself (e.g., the user creating/training the chat bot).”
Creeped out yet? Keep reading.
“In aspects, social data (e.g., images, voice data, social media posts, electronic messages, written letters, etc.) about the specific person may be accessed,” reads the patent description. “The social data may be used to create or modify a special index in the theme of the specific person’s personality. The special index may be used to train a chat bot to converse in the personality of the specific person.”
Added bonus? “A 2D or 3D model of a specific person may be generated.”

Any of this sound familiar? It could if you happened to catch the gut-wrenching Black Mirror episode “Be Right Back.”
