Kaitlyn Schultz (@kaitlyn.a.schultz) shared her warning with Alexa, Crystal and Josh while on the North Carolina flight.

A self-described eavesdropper was on a flight headed to North Carolina when she overheard (assumed) executives having a conversation. And now she has a warning for their workers, Alexa, Crystal and Josh: You might be getting laid off.

TikTok creator Kaitlyn Schultz (@kaitlyn.a.schultz) relayed the information in a TikTok video with the caption, “If your bosses are headed to Charlotte North Carolina rn [right now] I heard them say well we could fire Alexa, Crystal and Josh.”

The open overhead bins in the video suggests she relayed the information in real time. She later panned the phone camera to show the back of their heads, hoping to give more imagery so it reaches the correct Alexa, Crystal, and Josh.

“This is an absolutely wilddddd conversation to have on a commercial flight,” noted one commenter.

‘I Hope This Finds Them’

The video, viewed 982,000 times brought a lot of people together holding out hope for the trio. But on the flip side, the comments section also told a tale of two realities. For some, the post was comedic.

“Jokes on you, I mentally quit months ago,” joked a user named Josh.

“Boots in the air journalism,” another quipped.

“You can’t find Josh because he’s too busy joshin’ around,” a third said.

But for others, the post hit too close to home and overwhelmingly so.

“As someone who was BLINDSIDED by a layoff last week I hope this finds them!,” said one commenter.

“Also got blindsided by a layoff last week. I’m 19 weeks pregnant and have no insurance going into November,” another chimed in.

In the comments, people shared stories of their recent layoffs. Some offered encouragement and strategy.

“File for unemployment and reset your life,” suggested one TikToker.

Why Is Everyone Getting Laid Off?

In this current era of mass layoffs, countless people are feeling the burn. Companies are restructuring, shifting away from DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) and corporate is downsizing due to AI implementation. All of those variables are driving the current state of the job market, and economy, frankly.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, between May and August of this year, there has been a layoff of 6.89 million people, across all industries and sectors. A total of 13.8 million layoffs since January 2026. While layoffs are still actively happening, they are still down about 40% year over year. For the month of September, specifically, there has been a 20% decline versus this time last year.

The job market is currently in a low hire, low fire state, which means companies are holding onto employees while also not creating many new positions. To add fuel to the fire, there are also ghost positions (estimated to be about 33% of job postings) job seekers must contend with.

“Not them just casually changing lives on their flight,” said a commenter.

With expectation of mass layoffs still forthcoming, it is eerie to think an employee’s fate could be decided haphazardly, minutes before takeoff on a random Tuesday.
