OnlyFans, a self-described social media platform “revolutionizing creator and fan relationships,” has indeed transformed the landscape of adult content. How big is OnlyFans right now? Big enough for ABC News to launch an exposé into the subscription social platform that specializes in risqué content and for Hulu to release an in-depth OnlyFans documentary.
OnlyFans: Selling Sexy is a new documentary by Hulu that takes a deep dive into the salacious social media network. The upcoming OnlyFans documentary is a collaboration between ABC News Originals and Hulu.
OnlyFans: Selling Sexy “examines the voyeuristic and profit-making world of the online platform OnlyFans.” The documentary “enters the bedrooms and personal lives of several OnlyFans adult content creators.”
The new documentary follows amateur creators Tyson Dayley, Wynter Mosely, and Kirsten Vaughn, as well as professional entertainers such as Griffin Barrows, Silvia Saige, Cardi B, and Bella Thorne, who made $1 million from OnlyFans in the first month that she joined.
The documentary will explore how the COVID-19 pandemic caused OnlyFans subscriptions to explode. Since March, OnlyFans experienced 3.5 million more sign-ups, plus 60,000 content creators, according to Bloomberg. Many Americans decided to become OnlyFans creators as the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdowns caused the U.S. unemployment rate to climb.
The new Hulu documentary will dig into how the “choices they have to make as they increase their fanbases and income while facing the real world impacts and stigma surrounding online sex-work.”
“OnlyFans has definitely enabled us to call the shots,” one person says during the trailer for OnlyFans: Selling Sexy. “Anyone can come in from the ground floor and start making money.”
“OnlyFans is massively part of the pop culture zeitgeist right now,” the trailer states.
The Hulu doc features commentary from comedians Nikki Glaser and Donnell Rawlings, as well as insight from relationship therapists, sex educators, and culture journalists “to unpack the ways in which OnlyFans and its mysterious founder may be changing the world of online sex-work – for both good and bad – forever.”
OnlyFans has over 85 million users and more than one million content creators. In 2020, OnlyFans generated a whopping $2 billion in sales.
OnlyFans: Selling Sexy airs on Hulu on Wednesday, February 10.
