  • A clip from Wheel of Fortune went massively viral earlier this week.
  • The two-minute sequence saw the contestants unable to solve “another feather in your cap.”
  • Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak has since come to the defense of the players involved.

Earlier this week, we brought you the story of what’s perhaps the worst Wheel of Fortune sequence in the history of the storied game show, as it took three people over two minutes to solve “another feather in your cap” despite having 19 of the 23 letters in the phrase already figured out.

Pat Sajak, the host of Wheel of Fortune, didn’t seem to find the same humor in the moment that social media did, as the 75-year-old actually took to Twitter to defend the viral contestants, saying it “pains him” when contestants are subjected to online ridicule for their performance.

“It always pains me when nice people come on our show to play a game and win some money and maybe fulfill a lifelong dream, and are then subject to online ridicule when they make a mistake or something goes awry,” Sajak tweeted.

Sajak, who has been hosting Wheel of Fortune since 1981, also attempted to give some further perspective on the moment and tried to explain how something that seems so easily solvable can be so elusive.

“The first attempted solve was ‘Feather in your hat’ which, by the way, is how a lot of people say it. So all three players thought it was a good solve, and were stunned when I said it was wrong,” Sajak explained.

“Now imagine you’re on national TV, and you’re suddenly thrown a curve and you begin getting worried about looking stupid, and if the feather isn’t in your hat, where the heck can it be? You start flailing away looking for alternatives rather than synonyms for ‘hat.'”

You can read Pat’s nine-tweet long defense of the moment here. Ultimately, it’s actually a quite endearing thread as it shows just how much he truly cares about the show. Well said, Pat Sajak.
