If you were a kid growing up in the 1980s and 90s, then you know all about Pizza Hut‘s iconic “BOOK IT!” promotion. The premise is simple: hit a milestone for your summer reading goal, get free pizza.
And as we all know, there are few things as motivating when you’re a child than the promise of free pizza.
Last year, the company gave away its one millionth personal pan pizza to a child who hit their summer reading goal. This year, the promotion is back again, for its 41st year, and despite the fact that it is limited to children, Millennials are still fired up.
Millennials Freak Out Over Pizza Hut’s ‘BOOK IT!’ Promtion Returning
The excitement is primarily driven by nostalgia. But it’s also due to the fact that so many of us in our 30s and 40s took a real interest in reading and literacy due to the promotion.
While it may seem silly to praise a fast food chain for doing something that it knows will get customers in its stores, this feels like a win-win, and Millennials are all about it.
Corny as hell to praise a fast food place, but this did legitimately get me into reading a lot as a kid. I did not play when it came to pizza. I was turning those things in like crazy. https://t.co/ecvofialbW

Fond memories of those early years when my entire family dined out weekly on the pizzas I earned from being a massive nerd https://t.co/sZnZvwPMMJ

If you didn’t read 100 pages in 2 days for a free personal pan, did you even have a childhood https://t.co/IjYirJOhe6

Although some used the opportunity to get a giant weight off their chest, revealing that they faked having read the number of books required just to get free pizza out of it.
It’s been long enough that I finally feel like I can unburden myself: I didn’t read as many books over those summers as I claimed to. I lied for that pizza, and even though it may not have been earned, it tasted just as good. https://t.co/cL8zrwhNOC

On a serious note, at a time when literacy rates across the country are…troubling, to say the least, it’s exciting to see a promotion like this still going. Hopefully, it gets just as many young kids reading books now as it did when we were all kids.
