Rob McElhenney Is Trying To Find The Japanese Actor In ‘Shogun’ That Looks Just Like Him: ‘I Have Some Questions’

After a viral tweet pointed out that an actor from FX and Hulu’s hit series Shogun looks “like Japanese Mac”, Rob McEllhenney, the actor who famously plays Mac in the beloved long-running comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, is looking for answers.

First McEllhenney replied to the viral tweet, saying that it’s “time to do some research on my family history.”

Then, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator and star posted about it on his own account, hilariously stating that he’s “gotta find this guy” because he has “some questions.”

McEllhenney’s eastern doppelganger has since been identified as Japanese actor Hitoshi Masaki.

Shogun, which is airing on FX, the network that gave It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia its home in 2005, has been a massive hit thus far, as its widespread praise has only been matched by its massive viewership, as the series had a bigger premiere for Hulu than season two of The Bear.

Unfortunately for FX, however, while the series has received frequent comparisons to the early days of Game of Thrones, Shogun, based on the 1975 novel of the same name, looks set to be a miniseries that lasts just one season.

At the time of this writing, Shogun has just two episodes left in its 10-episode season, with the finale scheduled to air on Tuesday, April 23.

Alongside Hiroyuki Sanada in the lead role of Lord Yoshii Toranaga, Shogun — which is streaming on Hulu and Disney+ — also stars Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow, Fumi Nikaido, Néstor Carbonell, and more.

As for McEllhenney, in addition to his budding ownership of Wrexham AFC — who are chasing promotion for the second consecutive season — he’s still busy with his series It’s Always Sunny, which is gearing up for its historic 17th season, and the fourth season of his AppleTV+ comedy Mythic Quest.
