Ryan Reynolds Discusses The Process Of Moving Deadpool Over To Marvel Studios

Of all Marvel’s recently acquired Fox characters — X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool — Ryan Reynold’s Merc with the Mouth os the most ready-made to be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the character is not only a proven box-office commodity but his fourth-wall-breaking nature will make the transition to a new cinematic universe less awkward.

Still, moving an established character into a previously existing narrative as popular as the MCU is not without its challenges. In a recent interview with Total Film, Reynolds — who was promoting the now-delayed-until-December Free Guy — gave a peek behind the curtain, giving fans some insight into the process of swapping Fox’s superhero universe for Disney’s.

“Oh, man, I really don’t know,. It’s just all so new with it being over at Marvel now, and, you know, figuring out the ins and outs as much as I can, from where I sit. We’ll see.”

Speaking about the adjustment between going from outsider to insider at Marvel, Reynolds says: “I don’t feel like an insider at all. I think once I’m more intimate with it – if we get to make a Deadpool 3… if or when we get to make a Deadpool 3, I’ll probably have a better perspective on that. But I’m a huge fan of Marvel, and how they make movies. So when Disney bought Fox, I only saw that as a good thing. Deadpool hopefully being allowed to play in that sandbox, I think is just a win for everyone involved. But we’ll certainly see.” [via Total Film]

While no plans for Deadpool 3 have been formally announced, I’d be shocked if the beloved Reynolds character didn’t make his debut in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is set to begin in 2022 following the release of Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi, Thor: Love and Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the still-untitled third film in the Spider-Man franchise, and a bevy of Disney+ series.
