Sacha Baron Cohen’s ‘Who Is America?’ Interview With OJ Simpson Is Super Cringeworthy

Sacha Baron Cohen Who Is America OJ Simpson

Sacha Baron Cohen will go to great lengths for comedy, even dressing up as an absurd character and firing off a multitude of puns about murder while doing an interview with O.J. Simpson.

In the episode finale of Who Is America? that aired Sunday night on Showtime, Cohen became the character Gio Monaldo, a millionaire Italian fashion photographer and playboy. The eccentric character interviewed Orenthal James Simpson and introduced Simpson as an “American hero and women’s rights activist.” The interview is extremely cringeworthy and even uncomfortable at times.

In classic Borat style, Gio has some language and cultural barriers that set up the jokes.

“Me and you, we’ve got something in common,” Cohen tells Simpson. “We’re both ladykillers … In Italian it translates to ‘somebody who murders women.'”

Gio asks Simpson, “what happened the night with the wife?” As he seemingly attempts to get a murder confession out of the former star athlete about his ex-wife Nicole Brown.

“What wife?” Simspon asks. “The one you shot,” Monaldo replies.

“Well, first of all, she wasn’t my wife,” The Juice answers. “We had been divorced. And second of all, I didn’t do it.”

“We want you to be completely truthful with how you got away with it,” Monaldo presses Simpson.

“Hey, hey, hey,” Simpson says. “I didn’t get away with nothing. I didn’t kill nobody.”

Gio introduces his girlfriend to Simpson by saying, “She’s gorgeous, but sometimes I want to kill her. I want to send her on a private helicopter and throw her over the Grand Canyon—oopsie daisie!” Gio then gives Simpson a high-five.

Cohen’s character follows it up with, “If I do, you’ll introduce me to [Johnnie] Cochran?”

Simpson laughs it off and says, “I would have to introduce you in the afterlife.”

“What, you didn’t kill him too, did you?” Gio replies. Cochran was Simpson’s defense lawyer in his murder trial and he died from a brain tumor in 2005.

O.J. was acquitted in the murders of Brown and Ron Goldman in 1995.

The first season of Cohen’s Who Is America? had six episodes

There was a skit about guns that look like animals for kids.

Cohen was OMGWhizzBoyOMG, a Finnish YouTuber who has a channel dedicated to unboxing cute anthropomorphized desserts, for his interview with ex-sheriff Joe Arpaio.

And an interview with Bernie Sanders.

One interview that did not air this season was the one with Sarah Palin. Cohen tricked the former Alaska Governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate to John McCain into doing an interview by posing as a wounded veteran. The skit was lambasted by many as being insensitive and Showtime never aired the interview with Palin.

Cohen said that there will not be a second season of Who Is America?, but that’s exactly something someone who is doing another season of a prank interview TV show would say.
