Salma Hayek is one of the biggest sex symbols that the last generation of Hollywood has produced. But that’s not all she has to offer, as the 56-year-old Mexican-American actress has starred in a variety of projects over the years.

One of the franchises that Hayek is known best for is Grown Ups, which she starred in alongside Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, and David Spade.

According to Hayek, it was actually Sandler who helped Hollywood (and audiences) see past her sex-symbol status and actually evaluate her based on her acting skills.

“I was typecast for a long time. My entire life I wanted to do comedy and people wouldn’t give me comedies. I couldn’t land a role until I met Adam Sandler, who put me in a comedy [‘Grown Ups’], but I was in my forties!”

“They said, ‘You’re sexy, so you’re not allowed to have a sense of humor.’ Not only are you not allowed to be smart, but you were not allowed to be funny in the ’90s.” [via GQ UK]

In addition to Grown Ups and its 2013 sequel, the Academy Award-nominated Hayek has also starred in comedies such as Here Comes The Boom, Sausage Party, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, and The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. This year, she’ll also star alongside Channing Tatum in Magic Mike’s Last Dance.

As for Sandler — who is clearly one of the truly good guys in Hollywood — 2023 will see him star alongside Jennifer Aniston in Murder Mystery 2 (which hits Netflix next month), the drama Spaceman alongside Paul Dano and Carey Mulligan, and the animated comedy Leo.

He’s also working on another film with the Safdie brothers, who are the directors of his acclaimed 2019 film Uncut Gems. At this time, not much is known about the project other than it being in the works.
