When a beverage cart girl took a golfer's order, she was baffled. She has never heard of a Sandtrap before. Here's what's in it.

Jennifer Friday (@jennnbellee) has been serving up drinks on a Las Vegas golf course all summer. But this week, the beverage cart darling received a request that baffled her.  The order: one sandtrap.

In the clip, which has almost 1 million views, she admits to her 608,000 followers she had no idea what the golfer was asking for.

“I don’t know how I have been working here for so long, and I’ve never heard of it,” Friday says.

Almost three years as a beverage cart girl, and she says she’s never had this request. She notes she was so stumped that she wondered if the golfer was referring to a different drink.

“Are you talking about a transfusion or a water hazard? They were like, ‘No, a sandtrap,'” she recalls.

What Exactly Is A Sandtrap?

According to the golfer, a sandtrap is as follows:

  • One shot of vodka
  • Orange Gatorade (it must be orange or lemon-lime)
  • Lemonade
  • A splash of Sprite

Viewers pointed out that the sandtrap is strikingly similar to two other golf drinks: the water hazard and the fire hazard. The difference between the three drinks is simply the color of the Gatorade. The sandtrap consists of orange Gatorade. The Water Hazard features blue Gatorade, and the Fire Hazard (you guessed it) is red.

Sandtrap Variations

Friday’s drink recipe started a party in the comment section with a mix of users never hearing about it, some wanting to try it and other users denying that what she made was a sandtrap at all.

“That’s wrong. It [a Sandtrap] is 1.5 oz vodka, 1.5 oz coconut rum, fill with grapefruit juice, and topping with a splash of ginger beer,” said one commenter.

Another chimed, “a sand trap at my local course has coconut rum, cranberry juice and pineapple juice.”

Neither user is wrong. There are several variations of a sandtrap, which is a real but non-standard drink popular among golfers.

There’s a scotch-based version. Then there is the vodka-based version and the new, viral Gatorade version. In addition to those, local golf courses may also have their own unique version. For people who started drinking circa 2010 and earlier, this drink combination may be familiar. This new drink is the old Fade-o-rade.

In the world of golf, sandtrap is a popular drink name because it is an easy play on words. While golfers may never rally around just one version of the sandtrap, there is consensus that the drinks are refreshing.
