‘I Wasn’t Greeted When I Walked In’: Woman Gets Asked To Tip In A Place You Wouldn’t Expect—After Using Apple Pay

A woman went to a self-serve frozen yogurt shop and put together her own sweet treat. She tapped her Apple Pay and couldn’t believe it when the next screen asked her how much she wanted to tip.

In a video with over 126,000 views, TikToker Nyra DelRey (@nyradelrey) sits in her car after the shocking transaction. She says she heard other frozen yogurt customers on social media complain of the unreasonable tip request but that it hadn’t happened to her.

“I wasn’t greeted when I walked in either, which is OK. It’s a fro-yo shop,” she says. “I used Apple Pay, so nobody had to grab my card to take my payment.”

She says she was shocked when the screen asked how much she wanted to tip, noting that she didn’t actually receive any service.

“Who would I tip?” she questions. “If anything, the option needs to be, ‘How much would YOU like to be tipped?'”

Should You Tip At Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt Shops?

Other frozen yogurt customers notice similar tip screens, sparking outrage on the r/tipping subreddit. They reached a consensus that no service should equal no tip.

“Imagine expecting to get tipped 5 bucks for watching you get yogurt,” one remarked. “I get that she runs point of sale, wipes drips and refills the yogurt machines but it’s still pretty minimal.”

Another suggested, “This is why people are anti-tipping. ZERO reason to even be asked to tip in this situation.”

“I think you’re underestimating the effort involved. I’m sure that the training on how to correctly place that cup on the scale right-side up was likely the work of several sleepless months,” a third joked. “And you’re completely leaving out the skills involved in handing you a spoon.”

Viewers React To The Tip Screen

In the comments of DelRey’s video, viewers share unreasonable tip requests they’ve received. They suggest that tipping culture is out of control.

“Girl I went to an airport, an AIRPORT and went to an unmanned kiosk and bought a $10 bottle of water and the self checkout machine tried to prompt me for a tip,” a viewer shared.

“They gon make us tip the laundry machine at the shared units,” a second said.

I had a new garage door installed last year. About $1750. When I clicked to pay the invoice online it asked if I wanted to tip. ON. A. GARAGE. DOOR,” a third wrote.

Others shared their tipping philosophies and encouraged the TikToker not to feel bad about hitting “no tip.”

“You will never convince me to tip at coffee shops or froyo places. I’m only tipping if I’m sitting and they have to clean after me,” one suggested.

Another commenter wrote, “I only tip if I am sitting down having a meal and being served!!!!!”

Frozen yogurt shop workers even said that they don’t expect customers to tip.

“When I worked at yogurtland I never expected a tip.. some people would ask why would they tip if they did everything by themselves… I’d just say I’m not sure,” one worker wrote.

“I work at one of those and a lot of us don’t really mind if you don’t tip,” a second explained. “It’s not even up to us when it asks you that question, it’s ran by a different company.”
