A Sonic worker says a customer called corporate after she asked for his original burgers back before remaking an order that was missing bacon.

A Sonic employee says a routine complaint about two missing strips of bacon somehow escalated into a call to corporate. Jocelynn DuPont (@lifewith.joc) said a couple asked her to completely remake two burgers after discovering they were missing bacon. That wasn’t a problem. What confused her was what happened when she asked for the original burgers back.

According to DuPont, the customers insisted they could throw the food away themselves rather than return it to the restaurant. When she refused and eventually took the burgers back, one of them reportedly called Sonic corporate to complain.

“Why are people weird?” DuPont asked in the caption of her TikTok, which has been viewed more than 58,000 times.

It Started With Some Missing Bacon

DuPont, who was sitting inside a bathroom while wearing her full uniform, told her audience that she was reported to Sonic’s corporate team before making her video. According to her, it was because of a customer request and a supposedly botched burger.

She explained that during a regular shift, a customer pressed the call button. She noticed that they had already received food from Sonic, so she asked if they had an issue with their order.

The couple inside the car, she said, told her that someone forgot to add bacon to their burgers. DuPont told her audience that there was nothing wrong with the burgers themselves other than the missing bacon.

That’s when DuPont asked them a simple question.

“I asked them, ‘Do you want me to take your burgers back inside and go add the bacon, or do you want me to bring a side of bacon out for you guys?’” she said. The customers told her they wanted the order completely redone. DuPont then asked them for the burgers back, which apparently led to some frustration.

The couple told her they’d “throw them away” themselves, but DuPont refused. Eventually, DuPont got the burgers back, and she took them inside.

The Customer Calls Sonic Corporate

When DuPont finished working on the orders, she walked back outside. That’s when she noticed that the woman in the car was on her phone. According to her, she was calling Sonic’s corporate line.

“Mind you, it would’ve been so much different if it was a drink or if I actually … completely messed up your burger. But no, you guys just wanted two burgers each and, like, what? You’re calling corporate on me for doing my job,” DuPont said. “My job is to take back things and go remake them. I could have brought you out sides of bacon. I could have taken your burger inside and added bacon, but you wanted your whole meal remade.”

Restaurant Workers Explain Why Food Gets Taken Back

Some viewers questioned why Dupont had to take the burgers back inside to fix them. But other commenters provided ample explanations.

Botched food items, such as burgers and even some drinks, still count as inventory items for restaurants and chains. Additionally, many food service establishments try to vet the reason why food is sent back. Receiving the food itself can assist with determining whether it’s spoiled, which can help employees assess overall food quality.

A commenter, who said that they work at Sonic, added that the drive-in chain makes customers turn in their orders if they want their food to be remade.

“At my Sonic, we’re supposed to take the prior food back if they want it remade. That way we can track our waste and then they’re not getting free stuff,” they said.

Viewers theorized that the couple wanted to keep their burgers so that they’d get free food.

Another commenter added, “Kinda sounds like she wanted to get two more burgers for free by saying she’d throw them away herself and was probably going to keep them and the remade ones.”
