James Dolan is at the center of drama surrounding the ‘Sphere’ in Las Vegas. A recent angry outburst reportedly led his CFO to quit as the company reported a significant financial loss.

Five years in the making, the Sphere first lit up its exosphere on the 4th of July and officially opened at the end of September. It cause $2.3 billion, with a b, to build.

According to Sphere Entertainment Company, the world’s coolest indoor entertainment venue brought in event-related revenues of $4.1 million during its first quarter, including two sold-out U2 concerts. That number was supplemented by $2.6 million from sponsorship and advertising.

$6.7 million in revenue did not cover the Sphere’s operating expenses, which totaled $7.8 million— including venue operating costs, event-related expenditures and advertising. To make matters worse, the Sphere reported an operating loss of $98.4 million for the fiscal quarter that ended Sept. 30.

That number is rather jarring. However, the Las Vegas venue only officially opened on Sept. 29.

Despite the optimism for future revenue to surpass operating cost, there was frustration among high-ranking officials. It was reported last week that CFO Gautam Ranji suddenly resigned from his post.

The company said that it was “not prompted by a dispute within the company.” That may not be true!

What’s going on at the Sphere?

According to the New York Post, Ranji stepped down while getting chewed out by the CEO. Dolan, the billionaire CEO of MSG Entertainment and MSG Sports, was “yelling and screaming” at the CFO.

A meeting took place among senior executives in part to prepare for the company’s quarterly earnings presentation. Ranji was among those at the table.

Per the NY Post, Dolan ripped into Ranji. In response, the latter “calmly” left the room and submitted his resignation to the company’s general counsel.

Ranji had been the CFO of Sphere Entertainment for about 11 months. He reportedly had enough of Dolan’s anger and outbursts.

Sphere pushed back on that narrative in a statement to the NY Post.

The publicly filed 8K clearly outlines that his departure from the Company was not a result of any disagreement with the Company’s auditors or any member of management.

Ranji chose not to comment on his resignation, so the truth may never come out. Either way, it sounds like there is drama at Sphere and early revenue issues seem to be the trigger.
