Stone Temple Pilots have had a tragic run of lead singers over the past few years, but they now turn to a bright new talent. Former X Factor contestant Jeff Gutt was announced as the new lead singer of STP. Stone Temple Pilots introduced their new lead singer on SiriusXM on Tuesday and then quickly put their new bandmate to work for an invite-only concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles that night. Gutt joined brothers Rob and Dean DeLeo and played STP classics such as “Plush,” “Interstate Love Song,” and “Wicked Garden.” They also debuted a new song, called “Meadow.”

STP, which has been inactive since 2015, launched an exhaustive search for a new lead singer and sifted through hundreds of auditions, but in the end, Gutt was the right choice for the band. Gutt, a Detroit native, first caught the eyes of millions during his first appearance on the X Factor where he wowed the crowd and judges with his powerful rendition of Leonard Cohen’s classic “Hallelujah.”

Scott Weiland, the original singer and one of the founders of the influential alt-rock band since 1989, was fired from the group on February 27, 2013. Weiland was found dead on his tour bus in Minnesota on December 3, 2015. In the summer of 2013, STP turned to Chester Bennington to be their lead singer but on November 9, 2015, the singer announced he was leaving Stone Temple Pilots for a new Linkin Park album and tour. Bennington committed suicide and was found dead on July 20, 2017.
