Super Troopers franchise star and director Jay Chandrasekhar took a trip down memory lane during a recent interview and detailed the advice he’d give his younger self. His advice was simple: be nice to the Entourage guys.
During a recent podcast interview, Jay Chandrasekhar recalled his early days in Hollywood after the success of Super Troopers: making movies, going to parties, and generally having the time of his life when his agent called about a new HBO show called Entourage that wanted him to direct an episode.
Super Troopers director Jay Chandrasekhar recalls telling Entourage creator Doug Ellin that he thought the show sucked
“I would say to 16 year old Jay, to treat the guys from Entourage with respect,” Chandrasekhar said on The Honey Dew podcast.
“I was living in Hollywood. I’d made a couple of movies. I was going to all the parties. I was hooking up with hot actresses. I was like living it, right? So I get a call, my agent’s like, ‘There’s a television show HBO. It’s called Entourage. They want you to direct.’ I watch it and I’m like, ‘Nah.’ He calls me back. He goes, I told him you were gonna come in. And I’m like, why? I don’t want to f—— do the show. He goes, ‘It’s HBO dude. You can go in there, make it better,'” he continued.
“So I walk in. One of these guys, I think it was Doug, goes, ‘So, what do you think of the show?’ And I’m like, ‘I think it’s a mess.’ And they were like, they’ve been told I’m coming in to want to direct their show. And then I’m driving down Sunset and I see these Entourage billboards. I’m like, ‘What the f—? Why would they make this terrible show?’ And so I watched the first episode. I’m like, ‘Yeah, they did it again. It’s the same show. It’s terrible.’ And then watch the second one, I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s a little more irreverent.’ So, I watched the third one, I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s pretty good.’ And, now I’ve become the biggest Entourage fan in Hollywood. Like, this show is fantastic. And so I’m sending word. I’m like, ‘Hey, I’d like to direct this show,’ and they’re icing me. Had I done that show, I’m sure I would have directed Game of Thrones eventually. The lesson is, don’t be an a–hole.”
Chandrasekhar better hope Ellin doesn’t get wind of this anecdote, as the former writer seems to spend much of his time these days belittling his detractors on social media.
