The first footage of Syfy’s upcoming TV Series Nightflyers based on the George R.R. Martin novella of the same name and the series of short stories looks very much like its going to be a must-watch.

This early footage has a big time Alien feeling to it, which, based on what the author George R.R. Martin said about it makes a whole lot of sense.

“Nightflyers is a haunted house story on a starship. It’s Psycho in space.

Written prior to Game of Thrones, the book Nightflyers & Other Stories carries this description…

On a voyage toward the boundaries of the known universe, nine misfit academics seek out first contact with a shadowy alien race.

But another enigma is the Nightflyer itself, a cybernetic wonder with an elusive captain no one has ever seen in the flesh. Soon, however, the crew discovers that their greatest mystery – and most dangerous threat – is an unexpected force wielding a thirst for blood and terror.

The book had been previously adapted into a feature film back in 1987, and I use the term “feature” loosely, because, well, it wasn’t great. It’s not even available on DVD on Amazon, just VHS (look it up, kids).

Nightflyers, the TV series, is scheduled to premiere on Syfy this fall with Netflix as a co-producer, and holding international airing rights in addition to secondary airing rights in the United States.

Here’s how Netflix describes the new series…

“Set in the future on the eve of Earth’s destruction, a crew of explorers journey on the most advanced ship in the galaxy, The Nightflyer, to intercept an alien spacecraft. One that might just hold the key to their survival.”
