Buying a home comes with a lot of surprises. Unfortunately, many of these “surprises” aren’t exactly good.

You might think you’ve got everything sorted out. You looked at the neighborhood, the local schools, nearby activities—heck, you may have even done an inspection. Still, many important things can be missed, leaving you stuck inside a house that feels more like a cell than a home.

For example, one couple bought a home, only to discover that there were 450,000 bees living in the walls. Another discovered that their “beautiful” shower accidentally let the whole neighborhood see them in the buff.

Now, one real estate agent claims she found a house oddity she’s never seen before. Uh, why does this exist?

What’s The Deal With These Cabinets?

In a video with over 1.2 million views, realtor and TikTok user Heather Kerr (@heather.kerrrealtor) shows something she claims to have never seen in her six years of realty.

“You never know what you’ll find while showing properties,” she writes in the video’s overlay text. “At this point, nothing surprises me.”

The video shows what appears to be lower cabinets in a kitchen. After a few seconds, Kerr attempts to open the cabinets—only to discover that there’s nothing behind them.

To be clear, it’s not that the cabinets are empty. It’s that there’s literally nothing there at all—a flat wall disguised by two cabinet doors.

“Tons of cabinet space,” Kerr sarcastically remarks.

In the caption, Kerr speaks to the ridiculousness of the situation.

“Nothing surprises me after 6 years in this industry. But this one takes the cake,” she writes. “Well, besides the gas leak we found in the other home. I love my job!”

Is This Normal?

Fake cabinetry is surprisingly common—though it doesn’t usually go to this level.

Typically, fake cabinets or drawers are installed to provide visual unity across a kitchen. For example, it’s not uncommon to see a “drawer” under a sink that can’t be opened next to other drawers that can.

This isn’t meant to deceive prospective buyers; it’s simply done to keep a consistent design language across the kitchen.

While fake cabinets are less common than fake drawers, they do exist. They’re called “cabinet false fronts,” and they can serve a variety of purposes.

For example, a false front can hide braces, pipes, or other structural components. Like the drawers, they can also create a unified design language across a space.

Are They Necessary?

Thankfully, if you’re not a fan of cabinet false fronts, the solution is pretty easy. Most cabinet false fronts can be removed with a few twists of a screwdriver. After removing it, you can see if you prefer the cabinet-free look—or if you’re fine with a little trickery to keep a consistent look across the kitchen.

Unfortunately, if you hoped that you could turn the false cabinets into real ones, the chances that you can actually do that are pretty slim. Cabinet false fronts generally hide something structural or immovable—so unless you’re ready to redo all of the piping in your kitchen, you might just want to get used to having a few fake cabinet doors.

“Im just saying that this would be handy for the toddlers who always need to open cabinet doors,” offered another.

“Ok but now you get to create an incredible bit. Open the cabinets while saying ‘tons of cabinet space’ then turn to look and pause. and go ‘huh, it was there just last night,’” suggested a third.

“I mean whats the point in functional cabinets with these grocery prices,” laughed a further TikTok user.
