To the surprise of absolutely no one, HBO apparently has another hit on their hands, as the Pedro Pascal-starring zombie series The Last of Us has opened with a 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes (after 29 reviews).

In addition to Pascal, The Last of Us — an adaptation of the acclaimed video game series of the same name — stars Game of Thrones alum Bella Ramsey, Nick Offerman, Gabriel Luna, Melanie Lynskey, Anna Torv, Murray Bartlett, and more.

The reviews have been wildly positive across the board, with critics hailing the series as “the best video game adaptation” of all time.

“From the performances to the storytelling to the aesthetic elements, it’s an exquisitely made adaptation. But it also asks viewers to absorb a whole lot of human misery without saying much that we haven’t already heard in similar shows,” says the review in TIME Magazine.

The review in Empire Magazine says it’s a masterpiece:

“Comfortably the best adaptation of a video-game ever made: one that deepens the game’s dystopian lore, while staying true to its emotional core. Like the game, it’s a masterpiece, too.”

And the BBC agrees:

“It doesn’t feel even remotely controversial to call this the best video game adaptation ever made,” says the BBC.

The review from Collider is on the same page:

The Last of Us is a phenomenal retelling of a story that was already one of the best narratives ever told in a video game.”

The first episode of The Last of Us will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, January 15. The first season will consist of ten episodes and will likely be renewed for a second season within weeks of its premiere.
