Despite the fact that Disney spent the majority of the weekend revealing new Marvel Studios projects and dropping new Star Wars trailers and announcing more Disney+ content, it was the story of the property they would be losing that dominated the internet headlines.

Following last week’s bombshell report that Disney and Sony had failed to reach a new agreement over the usage of Spider-Man, fans were suddenly left with the realization that Spider-Man — arguably the franchise’s most popular character — may no longer be a part of the beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Now, those involved with the franchise have begun to speak out about the future of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, including Peter Parker portrayer Tom Holland himself.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at Disney’s D23 Expo, Holland finally broke his silence on Spider-Man’s potential removal from the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

“Basically, we’ve made five great movies,” Holland told EW. “It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”

Holland wasn’t the only one to open up about Spidey’s potential exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly “it never meant to last forever.”

“We got to make five films within the MCU with Spider-Man in it. Two standalone films and three with the Avengers. It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we would be able to do this, and we told the story that we wanted to tell. I will always be thankful for that,” Feige said.

Sure sounds like Spider-Man is officially done in the MCU to me. Don’t worry, though, Sony will likely figure out a way to hastily and sloppily wedge him into Venom 2! Yay…?
