New Jersey Man Measures Suspicious Tree In Front Yard. Then He Realizes It’s ‘Getting Closer’: ‘Have You Seen The Videos Of Walking Trees?’

A man is convinced that the tree in his front yard is moving—or that it might not even be real at all.

While it might sound like a theory out of “The Truman Show,” the man says he’s got evidence to prove it. Now, he’s sharing his tale with social media, and people are pretty freaked out.

In the first video, which currently has over 20.7 million views, TikTok user @sorrytoyourfather says that “something’s f—— fishy around here, and I don’t like it.”

“This tree, I know. I know this tree well,” he says, referring to a single tree. He then shows the tree next to it. “This f—— thing, that thing is not real. That’s not a real f—— tree.”

Is This Tree Really Moving?

According to the TikToker, there’s substantial evidence that something is amiss with the tree in his yard. To start, he says it’s not in any of his childhood photos. Next, he says it “doesn’t even show up on Google Maps.”

“On top of that, I feel like it’s been getting closer to me,” he says. “I…went out there the other night and measured it. 375 feet away from me. I measured it this morning: 345 feet away from me. The motherf—– is getting closer.”

He closes by saying there’s “no logical explanation.”

“It’s not real,” he states. “Life is a f—— simulation.”

More Evidence

In a follow-up video, the TikToker shows himself measuring the distance to the tree. He does so by walking to it from his fence, going toe-to-heel, then calculating the number in feet and inches.

According to him, this new measurement shows the tree is now 339 feet away from him—meaning that it’s moved even closer. Furthermore, he says that, when looking at it closely, “Everything about this thing looks fake.” Even hitting it, he claims that “it doesn’t sound real.”

“I also haven’t seen one bird land in this tree,” he says. “I’ve been staring at it for about two and a half hours. Not one f—— bird.”

In a subsequent video, he claims that the second tree looks “glossy” and that the two of them “look closer.”

What’s Happening Here?

It’s possible that the TikToker is simply joking and doesn’t actually believe the tree is fake or moving closer toward him.

Even if he does, some factors can explain pretty much every detail.

As far as the measurement is concerned, his method is imprecise, to say the least. Starting from even a slightly different position can result in several feet of difference by the time he reaches the tree, which can explain the inconsistent distances.

Other factors, such as the undisturbed ground next to the tree (and the fact that trees usually don’t move by themselves), reiterate that it’s pretty unlikely the tree is moving. There are some “walking” tree species, but this is not one of them.

As for why he doesn’t recognize the tree, it could be that the tree has existed all his life, but that he hasn’t taken specific notice of it. This could be a form of habituation, where the stimulus is so common that one doesn’t recognize it.

Why doesn’t the tree show up on Google Maps or in his childhood photos? That’s more of a mystery. Camera angles could be at play—or the TikToker could just be fabricating the details to spice up the story.

Commenters Want More

In the comments section, users peppered the TikToker with questions in search of an explanation.

“We need you to set up a camera for a timelapse or something,” a commenter said.

“Tomorrow it’s gonna be in front of the other one,” a second stated.

Others just affirmed that the TikToker was onto something.

“I believe him.. idk life’s been f—— weird lately,” a user wrote.

“Your tree is getting closer and I have had a tree that’s been on my property for 7 years just straight up disappear,” added another.
