I Once Embarrassingly Got Arrested By A Rent-A-Cop For Smashing Fluorescent Lightbulbs Outside My Favorite College Bar

No matter who you are, or how cool you think you might be, there’s always an embarrassing story floating around about you. For instance, when I was a junior in college at Kentucky, I slyly walked stumbled out of my favorite bar with my roommate and then girlfriend, boasting about getting served a free shot after the bar technically closed. So cool, right?

Well, things took a turn for the worse when, outside said bar, my roommate and I figured it’d be fun to smash a bunch of fluorescent lightbulbs in the street, pretending to sword fight with them and, generally speaking, be total pieces of drunken trash. When a “cop” approached us asking for our IDs, we knew the party was over.

At least I thought it was.

Unlike my smart roommate who didn’t hand over his ID and just kept walking, this officer was nothing more than a rent-a-cop working the graveyard shift, and now had possession of my driver’s license as he radioed in to the real officers. Talk about a buzzkill. Minutes later, I was cuffed in the backseat of a cruiser, answering questions about why I was such a drunken moron.

Making things worse was this: My then girlfriend had her sister’s fake ID, so when the real cops asked my her name, I confidently uttered “Alli,” only to be told later that it read “Sarah” on the license. She, too, got arrested.

Now, despite being an idiot who got his ex-girlfriend arrested with him — which led to a brief breakup — I guess I learned my lesson: Being embarrassing doesn’t pay. Then again, when I was in college, there wasn’t a contest that did actually pay for embarrassing stories, with Vocal running its “(No) Regrets” Challenge, allowing you to share embarrassing situations without judgement, all for the chance to win cash prizes as high as $5,000. But make sure to sign-up before the April 27 deadline!

The contest is being judged by BroBible’s own Francis Ellis, who co-hosts the Oops the Podcast, which is dedicated to all bad decisions, the aftermath, the path to redemption, and all things in between. So, yeah, this should be pretty fun.
