‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Is STILL Holding Onto The Hope Of Releasing In 2020

Warner Bros.

First things first: I think we can all agree that Gal Gadot. That’s it. Glad we’re in agreement. So, with that now established, trust me when I say that I’m as excited about Wonder Woman 1984 as anyone, as it arguably looks better than its predecessor, which was already one of the greatest comic book movies of all-time.

But for Warner Bros. — the studio who forced Tenet into theaters into the midst of a pandemic — to act like Wonder Woman 1984 still has a chance of coming out this year is truly laughable. The increasing cases of coronavirus aside, it’s as if they’ve learned nothing from Tenet, which is looking like it’s going to wind up being a financial disaster (its current global box office total sits at around $325 million).

And yet, despite the audience’s obvious reluctance to head to movie theaters in droves these days, Ann Sarnoff, WarnerMedia’s head of studios and networks, recently said she “hopes” that WW84 will be able to stick to its December 25 release date.

“I hope so,” she said. “It really is about how the U.S. continues to open and whether there are any other surges. We’ve got a little bit of time to figure that out,” Sarnoff said. [via IndieWire]

The most likely outcome here is that WW84 — just like No Time To Die and Black Widow and Fast 9 — gets delayed to next summer. But, in my perfect world, I’d love to see Warner Bros. send the film to HBO Max, which is already struggling for subscribers. Not only would it drive additional subscribers, but it would certainly make more than it would at theaters, as Wonder Woman is the type of product they could sell for $30+ for a 24-hour rental.
