Look, we rarely blog about ABC’s hit franchise The Bachelor or The Bachelorette. But we have in the past and I think this post is important for the sake of human decency and advocacy right now. A few weeks ago John Oliver had a wonderful rant about the stupid, mouth-breathing Internet trolls who threaten, slut-shame, and cyberbully women online. Particularly celebrity women and women in the media.
Last night’s episode of the The Bachelorette illustrated just how rampant cyberbullying has become. 29-year-old bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe was subjected to a brutal series of slut-shaming tweets after she made the choice to have sex with one of the contestants, Nick Viall. In other words, a consenting adult had casual sex with another consenting adult and is now receiving death threats over a perfectly normal adult decision.
Here are some of the tweets she’s received:
Holy shit. What is wrong with you, Internet? Pent up sexual frustration much? Fortunately, the dude she slept with, Viall, responded on Twitter that this sort of bullshit double-standard needs to stop. That’s the definition of a Bro move…
Kaitlyn showed a lot of courage by admitting 2 having sex on national TV knowing that she will be unfairly judged by some. #TheBachelorette

Be less terrible, Internet.
