It’s happening!!! Leonardo DiCaprio, Hollywood’s most outspoken and powerful champion of environmental causes, has reportedly thrown his weight (and $$$$$) behind a new Captain Planet film. There’s rumored to be a script in the works, being written up by Scream Queen‘s Glen Powell and Jono Matt (known for Sons of Anarchy).
Leonardo DiCaprio‘s reportedly on board to produce the project through Appian Way, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is still in the early stages of development and it’s unclear who will star in the big screen version of Captain Planet, one of the most beloved cartoons from the 1990’s.
If you’re not familiar with Captain Planet and the Planeteers, well, I’m sorry for you. It was an early morning cartoon which aired from September 1990 to December 1992, the Golden Age of cartoons. It brought all of the aesthetically pleasing elements from 1980’s cartoons into the early 1990’s all while addressing real world issues of deforestation, pollution, and other environmental terrors.
THR reports that this film would take place years in the future from when Captain Planet and the Planeteers took place, which I think seems obvious given that the cartoon went off air almost 25 years ag. And in this future, Captain Planet is ‘ a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him’, which sounds like a pretty dark take on the topic but one that I’m sure will be very commercially viable.
I’m wholly confident that Leonardo DiCaprio won’t fuck this up. If there’s one man in Hollywood we want working on this film it’s Leo, because he’ll make sure it’s done right.
