Patton Oswalt’s Emotional Tribute To His Late Wife Following His Emmy Win Was Heart-Wrenching

Sunday night Patton Oswalt, the pharma douche slayer, beat out Amy Schumer, John Mulaney, Tig Notaro and Robert Smigel to take home the Emmy for his comedy special, Talking for Clapping.

It was Oswalt’s first Emmy win and while he did mention on stage both his daughter Alice and his recently deceased wife Michelle McNamara saying, “I want to share this with two people: One of them is my daughter, Alice, waiting at home. The other one is waiting somewhere else, I hope,” he said even more backstage.

Oswalt, who penned a beautiful letter to his grief following the tragic loss of his wife after her passing earlier this year, was just as poignant with what he had to say about her following his big win…

“Every bit of growth that I’ve had in my career especially in my writing and my performing came because I met Michelle McNamara. Because I met and married this woman who just was so much wiser and self-actualized and aware of life than I was. I had convinced myself that I was aware and self-actualized and mature but then I met the real deal. So I think it’s one of the reasons I didn’t prepare a speech, because I was so comfortable with… especially when I saw taped specials and John Mulaney’s, and Hannibal Burress’, and Amy Schumer’s, I was okay going, ‘There are people in my life who help me to aspire to something and evolve to something better and I’m just lucky to get to have that in my life.’ So to have that ripped out of my life the way it has this year…I’m not trying to say that this is meaningless, but everything seems like the lights have been turned down 50 percent on everything since she’s gone. It just going to be a long, long time before I can be the kind of person she made me again.”

Don’t know about you, but I am feeling pretty glad that he won this year.

Even if his post-Emmys party wasn’t the greatest…

Never change, Patton. Never change.
