TNA Reportedly Tried To Sign CM Punk And Why That’s Utter Nonsense

TNA wanted to sign CM Punk? No kidding?

Not a week goes by in which some CM Punk rumor or sighting takes place giving everyone hope that he hasn’t really retired from wrestling. If the WWE isn’t muting or pissing off fans when they dare mention him, or some lawsuit or news of an arrest isn’t in the news, there’s always something.

This week’s pipebomb, so to speak, is that TNA made a strong move to sign CM Punk to be their cornerstone in an effort to land a new TV deal.

According to Wrestling, Inc

TNA recently made a play for CM Punk.

This was done similar to how they reached out to Alberto Del Rio, through an intermediary who is friends with Punk. The idea pitched was said to be a huge deal for Punk to be the top star of the company with pay similar to what Hulk Hogan was making. The idea is that Punk could be TNA’s flagship star and if he signs now, he could help get a strong TV deal.

Punk reportedly expressed no interest in working in pro wrestling again.

Of course CM Punk had no interest and of course he said he isn’t interested in wrestling again. Everything that’s been done since CM Punk’s “retirement” reeks of a slow build to his return to the WWE at or slightly before WrestleMania XXXI.

Think about it. Would Vince McMahon really have kept Punk’s fiancee AJ Lee on the roster if Punk was really suing him? And kept the Divas strap on her to boot? This is Vincent Kennedy McMahon we’re talking about here, one of the most vindictive people on the planet.

I wouldn’t even be surprised if the report that Brock Lesnar, and hence Paul Heyman, aren’t going to be on TV again until at least January had something to do with (Paul Heyman guy) Punk’s return as well. Can’t you just imagine the pop the crowd would give and the buzz it would generate if and when Lesnar, the ultimate heel, returns after months away only to have CM Punk came swooping in to try to take the title back from him and restore order to the WWE? I can, and I bet Vince McMahon can as well.

If WCW can keep it’s top star Sting out of ring action for over a year just to further a story, don’t you think Vince would do the same? Especially since CM Punk, the ultimate purist of a wrestler, would love to be THAT guy who fooled every smark wrestling fan in the world.

Never say never when it comes to the world of sports entertainment.
