And The Winner Was: Our Favorite Awards Season Movie Darlings On Plex

It’s movie awards season, which means it’s time to sit back (way back) and shake your fist at the TV as your favorite flicks get snubbed. Is that just me? Maybe it is. I’m just smarter than the critics. In honor of these awards shows, Plex has compiled a collection of some of the most popular award-winning movies (and notable snubs) over the years.

Oh yeah, and these are FREE to watch on Plex. I’m tempted to cancel all my weekend plans and just have a movie marathon. Hopefully, my fiancee won’t mind.

Here are some of my personal favorites:

L.A. Confidential (1997)

This is probably in my personal Top 10 favorite movies of all time. Just for context, this was competing in the same year as Titanic and Good Will Hunting. That’s a cinematic carpet bombing. This is the most overlooked of the three, with tour-de-force performances from Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger, and Kevin Spacey backdropped against the classic glitz and glam of 1950s Los Angeles.

Monster (2003)

Wow, Charlize Theron was scary in this one just from shaving her eyebrows off. It’s even scarier when you learn that this crime drama was based on the true story of serial killer Aileen Wuornos. There’s a reason Theron won so many awards for this one. Throw in a strong supporting performance by Christina Ricci and you’ve got yourself a truly gripping drama.

Stagecoach (1939)

I’ll be honest: I never really understood the hype around John Wayne until I saw this movie. When he popped up on the screen the first time, I immediately thought, “Wow. That’s a star.” This is the film that put The Duke on the map and for good reason. Sometimes old movies don’t always hold up outside of the context of their time period. This one does, and it set the tone for decades of classic John Wayne Westerns.

A Star Is Born (1937)

You’ve probably seen the recent version starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, but have you seen the original that ultimately led to three additional remakes? You know have a great story when people want to keep making new versions. The 1937 edition stars Fredric Marsh and Janet Gaynor as actors instead of musicians. Watch this one and you’ll want to watch all four.

Man On Wire (2008)

If you grew up in New York like I did, you always have a soft spot in your heart for Philippe Petit. Seeing him walk a tightrope between the Twin Towers will never not be thrilling. This documentary dives deep into how he pulled it off. Plus, this is one of the few times that the voters got it right giving a well-deserving, mainstream documentary all of the awards and praise.
