It’s time to have yourself a movie marathon. It’s winter, it’s cold outside, and here in Wisconsin, there’s been some ugly mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain for two straight days. So fire up some popcorn, cozy up under a blanket, and enjoy one (or several) of the great movies available on Plex right now. Oh, and in case you haven’t already been enjoying Plex, they’re free to watch.
Here are some of my personal picks that come off Plex this month, so you won’t want to miss them:
If you get a ringing endorsement from Quentin Tarantino, chances are you’ve got a pretty good movie. This flick might seem like another over-the-top gorefest on the surface, but its impact can be felt in movies, TV, and video games to this day. If you don’t mind a little extra blood, this is a wildly entertaining watch.

I mean, come on. Pacino vs De Niro in a crime thriller? I’m admittedly a sucker for any movie where De Niro is committing crimes, but this one sometimes gets overlooked compared to his other gangster movies. Plus, you get a killer supporting cast that includes Val Kilmer, Danny Trejo, and Tom Sizemore with some of the best robbery and shootout scenes you’ll ever watch.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)
The reason that shaky-cam, “found footage” horror movies are popular today. I’ve watched it enough times that it no longer scares me, but there’s really nothing like watching this for the first time. Makes it a little harder to go for a walk in the woods after sitting down for this one.

A strong candidate for my favorite documentary. If you’ve never experienced a Werner Herzog film, this will catch you up on his genius. The doc tells the story of Timothy Treadwell, an eccentric activist who lived in the Alaskan wilderness “protecting” grizzly bears…until he got eaten by one. A fascinating narrative packed with gorgeous footage of Alaska.

When you need a tough, gritty actor for a tough, gritty movie like this, you call up Viggo Mortensen. After all, the man became a master swordsman and broke his foot in the same movie. Throw in an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Cormac McCarthy and you’ve got one of the most underappreciated post-apocalyptic movies of all time.
