Now that we’re less than three months away from our wedding, my fiancee and I appreciate our free weekends when we can just curl up on the couch and watch a movie together. It also allows me to indulge in an over-the-top action movie after she inevitably falls asleep. She appreciates me not subjecting her to all the gratuitous violence, fistfights, and cheesy one-liners.
For me, there is no such thing as too many action movies. And thanks to Plex, I’ll never run out of options to get the adrenaline pumping. Here are some of my personal favorites free to watch on Plex this month:
Say what you will about Mel Jackson: when he’s dialed in and the bullets are flying, he’s as good as it gets. How many other actors can make good action movies for three decades straight? Gibson plays the eponymous Gringo, a criminal on the run who ends up in a Mexican prison and must fight his way through the inner workings of organized crime on both sides of the border.

Immortals meet through time from 17th century Scotland to modern-day New York to fight to the death because “there can be only one.” It’s as ridiculous as it sounds, but it was also made in the 1980s. Cut it some slack. Also, we’re going to ignore that Connery plays an Egyptian with a Spanish name but keeps his Scottish accent the whole time. He looks too funny in that hat.

You might know Donnie Yen as the blind warrior from Rogue One, but how you should know him is from Ip Man, which tells the story of the Wing Chund grandmaster who is best known as Bruce Lee’s teacher. Without Ip Man, we wouldn’t have some of the greatest martial arts movies of all time. Pay your respects.

When JCVD is in an action movie, you watch it. When JCVD gets in fights involving drunk dancing and taped-up fists covered in broken glass, you watch it and wonder why they don’t make movies like this anymore. If only he and Steven Seagal could have gone head-to-head in their primes.

The name alone should convince you to watch this cult classic. A homeless vigilante who blows away criminals, crooked cops, and pedophile Santas. A sophisticated actor like Rutger Hauer didn’t have to make a movie like this in the twilight of his career. But he did, and we’re forever grateful.
