Ford has outpaced other car brands in the pickup truck category with its F-150 and F-250 models. The Ford Motor Company will attempt to woo new customers with a vehicle unlike any of their previous pickup trucks. Introducing the 2022 Ford Maverick, the car brand’s new compact pickup truck that is affordable and available in a hybrid variety.

Not only is the Maverick the least expensive Ford pickup truck – thousands of dollars less than the Ranger – but it is the least expensive pickup truck in America. The 2022 Ford Maverick will have a starting price of $19,995, which is at least $5,000 less than the Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier.

So what do you get for a pickup truck that’s under $20,000? The entry-level Ford Maverick with the XL trim is a two-wheel-drive vehicle that is “the first standard full-hybrid pickup in America and the most fuel-efficient truck on the market with a targeted EPA-estimated rating of 40 mpg in the city,” according to the Ford press release. The hybrid will get 500 miles of range on a single tank of gas. The cheapest-priced Ford Maverick is built on the same unibody platform as the Bronco Sport and Escape.

The 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder hybrid powertrain can tow up to 2,000 pounds, and provides 191 horsepower and 155 lb.-ft. of torque.

For those who need a little more oomph can upgrade to the 2.0-liter EcoBoost gas engine that delivers 250 hp, 277 pounds of torque, and a 4,000-pound tow package. The gas engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and is available in front- or all-wheel drive.

The fully-loaded 2022 Ford Maverick price will be around $35,000 in the Lariat trim. The FX4 off-road package boasts all-terrain tires, a specially tuned suspension, underbody protection, hill descent, and a traction control system with extra terrain settings. Ford’s Co-Pilot360 driver aid package is also available.

The Maverick comes with a crew-cab body style, that has five seats. The rear seat folds up, revealing a storage bin, and can fit full-size mountain bike with its front wheel removed. The compact pickup truck features a 4.5-foot bed named the “Flexbed,” which offers various tie-downs, screw holes, D-rings, and wood plank slots. Options include accessible 12-volt wiring, an optional 110-volt outlet, and cubby compartments.

The 2022 Ford Maverick will go on sale in the fall.
