I’ve Been Cutting My Hair And Upgrading My Grooming Game At Home For A Year Now: Here Are My Tips

Presented in partnership with Braun

Given the fact we’re all locked up in our houses and apartments because of this whole quarantine business, there’s one thing everyone seems to be complaining about the most: how shaggy and out of control all of their hair has gotten. And because barber shops aren’t deemed an essential business, guys everywhere are forced to figure out how they can get a little trim without completely butchering it.

For all those dudes out there who have never given themselves a home haircut, beware of what you’re getting yourself into — because it’s not always easy the first few times, and, like anything, takes some practice to master.

Consider this a cautionary tale, as Twitter and TikTok are filled with hack job haircuts and bad beard trims.

Luckily, as someone who’s cut his hair from home for the past year now, I’d like to consider myself an expert. Sure, I’ve gotten things tightened up a handful of times by visiting a barber before things like weddings, but, other than that, I’m the master of my domain when it comes to my hair. And because none of us have any other options right now to go get it cut, I’m offering up my tips to try and upgrade your mane game while at home, too.

So you’re probably asking why I even started doing a home haircut to begin with, right? Valid question, and here’s why: because I’m cheap AF. No, really, that’s the legit reason — because who wants to spend $35/month or more on a haircut? That averages out to $420 a year; and that’s a pretty conservative price point.

For me, it all started when I noticed I had some thinning hair, but that things were still growing super fast both atop my head and with my beard. Somehow, my 5 o’clock shadow began showing up around lunchtime. That led to haircuts with my barber every five days or so in order to avoid that whole bowl look up top, and that shaggy beard on my face; guys, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Instead of paying $15 for a trim one time a week, I insisted on getting my own clippers: and landed on Braun’s Multi-Grooming Kit to get the job done.

The trusted name in shaving and grooming, a bald buddy of mine recommended using one of Braun’s products since he had used these things for his own home haircuts and grooming since the year prior. And because Braun’s running some amazing deals right now (see below), it’s time to snatch up your tool of choice when trying to look your best from the comfort of your own home.

With tons of models and attachments to keep all of your locks looking golden, take a look below at some of my tips to give yourself an A+ haircut from the convenience of your home bathroom.

1. Always Have Good Lighting

If this isn’t first thing on your list before giving yourself a home haircut and grooming, you’re in real trouble — ’cause how are you going to do a job well done without seeing all of your hair? I prefer cutting my hair in my bathroom over my sink, just so I have good lighting, a big mirror and a counter to help catch some of the clippings. Regardless of where you choose, just make sure you have proper light so not to butcher it.

2. Know Your Guard

One of the best things about Braun’s Multi-Grooming Kit? It has tons of attachments to help put you in control of all your hair length. For instance, the Grooming Kit is the ultimate all-in-one styling kit, and helps get nine jobs done thanks to seven different attachments. These all help maintain stubble on your face and neck, keep your edges nice and clean around the neck, ears and forehead, and provide a precision trim on all the hair you’re looking to shave or cut.

3. Get Some Help

This is where my girlfriend really comes into play. As somebody who used to just wing it when it came to the back of my neck — and basically guessed with where the hairline ended — thankfully, my lady’s there to help line things up for me the right way. This obviously makes a huge difference, and can go a long way in the overall success of your home haircut or grooming routine.

Plus, when I’m taking care of my facial hair and need to do a little trim of my eyebrows or chest hair, having my girlfriend around to give me feedback isn’t always the worst thing. I mean, I want to make sure I’m handsome for her, right?

Also, make sure you’ve got some inspiration for yourself, too. If that means looking at celeb styles to try to model your own look after, so be it. Whether it’s getting the right beard length or the perfect fade, do a little research before just diving into doing it yourself.

4. Take It On The Road

You know, for the future, when we’re not responsibly distancing and avoiding nonessential travel. Another great feature of the Braun’s Multi-Grooming Kit is that it’s easy to travel with thanks to its soft pouch travel bag. That means you can drop it in a duffle bag or suitcase for any trips you take, just so you can stay looking as sharp as possible.

For instance, when I went to my sister’s graduation last year, I didn’t have time before jetting off to cut my hair and shave the bushy beard I was sporting at the time. Rather than be shaggy for her big day, though, I brought along Braun’s Multi-Grooming Kit to touch things up before standing around for pictures with the family. I’d like to think I looked the best, but that’s just my opinion.

5. Use It In The Shower For Easy Cleaning

OK, now that you’ve got your hair all done and you’re looking sharp, there’s one last thing you need to do to look sharp: trim up that facial hair of yours. Luckily, since the Braun’s Multi-Grooming Kit is completely waterproof, you can trim up your beard from the comfort of your own shower to avoid the mess of those loose hairs; or simply just run it under water in the sink once you’re done to clean it off.

6. Focus On The Sides

As mentioned above, no guy wants to have that whole bowl or Grizzly Adams look going on, so it’s important to know where you should focus your attention to. Well, that would be the sides, because, as we all know, that’s where hair seems to always grow fastest, so you’ll need to give it some TLC.

Having tight sides means a thinner look in the face, and, if we’re being honest, just a more stylish and handsome look overall.

With all the attachments designed for different lengths of hair, the Braun’s Multi-Grooming Kit makes it easy AF to keep the sides tight, your neck line straight and your beard nicely trimmed. And, since nobody’s seeing you much now anyway since we’re quarantined, now’s a great time to test out your home haircut and grooming skills.
