In June 1864, in the middle of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln, with a stroke of his pen, preserved the Yosemite Valley for all Americans to enjoy, long before it was the backdrop of countless adventurers’ tales. 26 years later, it was designated a National Park by an Act of Congress on October 1, 1890. Over 150 years, it’s not just been a wilderness playground for the occasional dignitary or selfie-seeking tourist, but a stomping ground for 4 million visitors each year.
This summer, I was one of them.
After six years in California, I finally ventured to Yosemite, tagging along with the Grunt Style crew. I came expecting nature’s beauty, of course. I’ve hiked, camped, and hung out in plenty of National Parks before. But I was wholly unprepared for the internal “wow” I experienced on a day-trip to Yosemite. It was pure reverence. Teddy Roosevelt nailed it when he likened camping in Yosemite to “lying in a vast cathedral.” Everywhere I turned, the legacy of visionaries like John Muir and Mather whispered in the breeze.
Breathing in that crisp Sierra Mountain air, a very raw realization hit me: This place is so much more than nature’s grand theater. It’s one of America’s great crown jewels, yes. But the fact that we’ve so lovingly committed to leaving it untouched in all its natural splendor is a testament to our country’s tenacity and vision.
We the people did a good thing here. Yosemite is more than just serene beauty; it’s a silent testament to fierce American patriotism. Amidst its rugged terrain, with purple mountain majesties and cascading waterfalls, I felt that bold and unyielding heartbeat of the American spirit.
“Damn,” I thought. “This is why I’m always so proud to jam with America.”
When Woody Guthrie penned the words “This land is made for you and me,” this was exactly what he was talking about. Perhaps the craggy peaks of El Capitan and Half Dome, along with the towering redwoods of Yosemite, echoed in Woody’s thoughts when he wrote the song. Each peak and valley embodies the spirit of his anthem: a shared American legacy.
Shared. That’s the key word. Yosemite is a place we share. As Americans, Yosemite is ours.
