Ultra Marathon Runner Matt Johnson Attempted 7 Ironman Races In 7 Days. Here’s How It Went…

Matt Johnson has never been one to turn down a challenge. From his Army career to running across the entire state of Texas in just 17 days, this ultramarathoner/triathlete not only takes on these challenges with full gusto, but also refuses to be discouraged when he hits his body’s breaking point.

“It was never about proving that I couldn’t be broken. I can be broken. I can hurt. I can fail. I can come up short. I can give everything that I have and still not get the ending that I wanted. But none of those things get to decide who I am. What matters is that when it got dark, I kept choosing to go back into it again and again and again until there was nothing left to give. There’s a strange peace in knowing that I didn’t save anything for the walk home.” – Matt Johnson

His latest physical endurance challenge would be his toughest test to date.

This past August, Johnson attempted to run seven Ironman races in seven days. Co-sponsored by ALP Nicotine Pouches, “Project 7” covered almost 900 MILES of running, biking, and swimming.

In the end, Johnson only made it through six Ironmans before running out of time on Day 7. Johnson attributed some of the difficulties of this challenge to the long hours, which got up to 19 hours by Day 6.

So what was harder: running across Texas, or Project 7?

“I’d run across Texas twice before I ever did that again. It was the hardest thing I ever did.”

Johnson’s efforts weren’t entirely in vain, though. Project 7 helped raise over $50,000 for Valorfit, a nonprofit organization that pairs veterans with communities to help rebuild their confidence while providing financial aid for their gym membership.

How do you define a failure? I believe that we as people define what our failures are. And walking away from this, I felt like I had failed until I really sat in it and became brutally honest with myself on what was this event truly about. And it was about pushing myself. It was about finding those limits.
