One of the joys of doing these posts is revisiting some of my favorite movies or movies that I haven’t seen in ages. It’s very rare for a cinephile like me to come across a mainstream movie that I’ve never seen or even heard of for that matter. Let’s discover a new movie together with 2001’s Joy Ride starring Paul Walker that’s free on Plex this month.

Lewis (Walker) and Fuller (Steve Zahn) are two brothers road-tripping to see Lewis’ love interest Venna (Leelee Sobieski). A simple prank with a CB radio goes awry and they find themselves in the crosshairs of a psycho killer. It’s an odd balance to have a quasi-horror/thriller with a spunk young cast like this, but it miraculously works and it’s thoroughly entertaining.
Hold the phone: Paul Walker driving in a movie? How farfetched.
Shout out to another perfect turn-of-the-millenium cast. This is Walker right after Varsity Blues and the first Fast & Furious movie, so he’s still just as cute as a button. Steve Zahn has perfected the art of being the “hey, that’s the guy from that one movie” actor for the last 30 years. Leelee Sobieski was admittedly a childhood crush of mine and I’m still a little bummed that she stepped away from acting.
