Diplo’s ‘Mad Decent Block Party’ Results in 1 Death, 1 In Critical Condition, 20 Hospitalized, and 50 Underage Drinking Citations

Ugh… Another black-eye for the EDM scene. Diplo’s ‘Mad Decent Block Party’ rolled through Maryland’s iconic Merriweather Post Pavilion this weekend. The all-ages show resulted in a litany of bad vibes, including 20 hospitalizations, 1 death, and in critical condition. Via Live for Live Music:

A 20-year-old has been pronounced dead and a 17-year-old is in critical condition following this weekend’s Mad Decent Block Party at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. 20 in total were taken to the hospital, with most cases appearing to be drug related.

Tyler Fox Viscardi of Raleigh, NC was escorted to a local hospital around 9 PM on Friday for an apparent overdose, and passed away a short time later.

Police also issued 50 citations for under age drinking and arrested three: for assaulting a police officer, domestic assault, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

I’m going to sound like a curmudgeonly old man,  but it’s time to stop making these EDM shows all ages. Logistically it’s tough at a massive outdoor amphitheater like Merriweather, but there HAS to be a way of raising the barrier of entry to these types of things so more mature people get through. Too many kids who go to raves like this without knowing what the hell they’re doing, enabled by a mob of like-minded idiots.
