San Francisco 49ers defensive end Arik Armstead, recently gave fans a glimpse of the harsh reality behind those giant NFL game checks, and how much is lost to taxes.

Taxes hit NFL players hard, now we learn how much. It obviously varies depending on where they play. In Florida, for example, obviously it’s a lot more simple, but states like New York and California are like tax vultures.

Reporter Darren Rovell shared a snapshot of Armstead’s earnings after the player posted a video on TikTok recently. While Armstead earns $395,055 per game, that is taxman gets a cut. Armstead losses 49.3% of his earnings to taxes.

So, after Uncle Sam and the state take their cut, Armstead is left with a still-not-too-shabby $194,085 in his pocket. Not bad, but it could have been better if he was donning, for example, a Miami Dolphins jersey, where they don’t have income tax.

Armstead signed a 5-year, $85 million deal in 2020, with a $48.5 million guaranteed.

The former 17th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the 29-year old Armstead has 28.5 career sacks, 290 tackles, 42 tackles for a loss and 83 quarterback hits.

His NFL paycheck revel just reminds us that even the stars have to deal with taxes like the rest of us.
